Droitwich chip shop spreading Christmas cheer for charity

A DROITWICH fish and chip shop is looking to give back this Christmas by donating a festive £500 to one local charity- and they want your help to decide who that is.

Jaspal Singh, owner of Queens Fish and Chip Bar, will be donating £500 to a local charity or good cause just before Christmas and has started a Facebook campaign urging customers to decide where the cash will be going.

The idea was launched around a week ago, and Jaspal and the Queens staff are currently in the process of gathering suggestions.

A shortlist will soon be announced on the Queen’s Fish and Chips Facebook page, and a public vote will then decide which cause will get the cash.

The nominees could be a small community group, a school fundraiser, a local support charity or any other good cause close to your heart.

Jaspal has been a staple in Droitwich for years now, having opened his fish and chip shop on Queen Street back in 1994.

He believes Christmas is the time when people and charities struggle the most, and wants to help out in his own way and spread some festive cheer.

He told the Standard: “He did something similar during Covid, because people were struggling back then, and one night I had the thought of doing the same again.

“For a business to be around for so long is down to the community.

“I love Droitwich; there is a real spirit and togetherness to it, and this is a way to give back.

“When the Ravel Hotel fire happened, everyone was devastated. It really hit the community hard, but that just sums up how deeply we feel about Droitwich.

“It’s cold, people are struggling, and this is my way to help and raise some Christmas community spirit.

“I am proud to be part of Droitwich, and proud to give back- it’s Christmas too, so there is no better time to do something like this.”

Jaspal added that he was thinking about doing this kind of charitable act more often.

He will be paying the £500 from his own pocket, but anyone who wants to donate to boost the charitable coffers is welcome to do so.

Almost 80 people have taken to the comments of the Queens Fish and Chip Bar Facebook page to give their suggestions on good causes to donate to.

Good causes suggested so far include the Droitwich Community Pantry and Fridge, Droitwich Challengers Gateway Club, The Crafty Cafe and the Danemere Kennels and Cattery.
