Droitwich Community Choir looking for more men to join its ranks

IT IS SET to be a busy time for Droitwich Spa Community Choir which has a new base and is looking to recruit more male singers.

The choir now meets at the town’s Baptist Church, Ombersley Street East, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on Tuesday evenings.

Droitwich Working Men’s Club hosted the choir for the last year, but an increasing number of darts and crib fixtures on Tuesday evenings made the choir reluctantly change their weekly venue, although it is very grateful for the hospitality it has enjoyed.

The choir’s aim is to support the local community and the programme for 2018 includes all of Droitwich festivals and several garden parties for good causes, along with visits to residential care homes.

The choir has over 50 members and is ready to welcome more.

There are no auditions to pass, everyone who enjoys music is welcome, particularly tenor or bass voices.

Currently, men are outnumbered six-to-one by the women.

The climax of the choir’s activities each year is the Christmas Concert with the Salvation Army Band and the carol singing in St Andrew’s when the town’s Christmas lights are switched on.

All the choir’s public concerts are given without charge – last year’s Christmas Concert, thanks to local shops, even saw free refreshments provided and donations enabled £150 to be contributed to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal.

Anyone wanting to find out more about what the choir is like and to have a go at singing should go along on a Tuesday evening for a free trial.

“Singing is fun, good for your health and enriches the local community,” added a spokesperson for the choir.
