Droitwich councillor hits out at subway lighting issues and asks if town's underpasses should be filled in and replaced with crossings

A DROITWICH councillor has hit out at the state of the town’s subways after it took weeks to repair some of the lights and others still need fixing.

Coun Alan Humphries contacted The Standard about the issue relating to the underpasses on Ombersley Street, Ombersley Way and near Briar Mill where Droitwich Spa High School is.

He said, as children, the elderly and vulnerable people used the walkways, it was important the lights were working, especially with the clocks going back an hour later this month.

“The lights in the subway were out for more than a month this time and it does seem to have happened a lot,” he added.

Coun Humphries questioned whether Highways should look at the long-term picture and maybe should consider filling in the subways and installing crossings instead, as has happened in other towns and cities.

“Birmingham got rid of theirs a few years ago and when you go up to the city centre it feels a lot safer generally.

“I remember residents there wondering what they would do when they were taken away but it works fine.”

A Worcestershire County Council spokesperson said: “We always listen to suggestions from local people and councillors, and will feedback directly to Coun Humphries.

“In the meantime, the lighting issues in the Droitwich subways are being addressed.

“The Ombersley Street lights have already been replaced and are now working.

“We are aware of a second issue, concerning the three subways by the school on Ombersley Way and Briar Mill which are now in the process of being repaired.”
