A COUPLE have praised the team at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital for the help they received with starting their family.
Robert and Lucy Buck, who are from Droitwich, had been trying for a baby since they got married in September 2017 but were devastated by two miscarriages.
The first was classed as a missed miscarriage, confirmed at their 12-week scan, and the second was also lost in the first trimester.
The pair were then faced with unexplained infertility after trying again to conceive for more than two years.
At the time, couples were not entitled to support on the NHS until they had three miscarriages so the pair took the tough choice to pay and go private.
They were looked after by Sabah Baghdadi, consultant gynaecologist and fertility specialist at the Priory Hospital in Edgbaston, Birmingham.
Mr Bhagdadi identified that Lucy needed surgery to remove polyps, cysts and endometriosis in preparation to start a round of IVF.
The pair got lucky and, after a round of IVF which was funded by the NHS, they conceived their son Benjamin who is now almost three.
Lucy, who works as an administrator for the British Red Cross, said: “He is an absolute character and is loved beyond words.
“We will forever be grateful to Mr Baghdadi for everything he did for us.”
In 2023, Lucy and Robert decided to try for a second baby. This led to more surgery to remove new polyps and cysts and a further round of IVF in November 2023 with one of their frozen embryos from the couple’s first round.
On this occasion they were heartbroken when that round of IVF failed.
Miraculously they ended up conceiving naturally the following month and welcomed their second son Oliver in July 2024, with no complications.
Lucy added: “The team at Worcestershire Royal Hospital were fantastic, especially the surgical team and the midwives.
“One student midwife in particular who really looked after us was Meg Bradley and we will never forget her kindness.”
The pair wanted to share their story with others who are going on their own infertility journeys and send a message to them not to give up hope.
They also wanted to thank all the wonderful medical teams which helped them along the way.
“Sometimes it takes grit and determination but don’t give up – just keep trying.”
The pair also found useful information and support from the Miscarriage Association and Tommys the baby charity.
