A DROITWICH charity has highlighted the ‘incredible’ contributions of one of its female volunteers who supports the organisations community transport service in wake of International Women’s Day (March 8).
Droitwich Spa CVS have shone a spotlight on the dedication of 62-year-old Pauline Johnson-Jones, known as Po, who helps community members access medical appointments and social activities one day a week.
Po, a part-time social worker in Worcestershire began volunteering a couple of years ago to keep herself busy on her days off.
Previously she would cherish spending time with her father who passed away not long before she began volunteering.
Po told the Standard: “I did so much with my dad that it has helped keep me busy afterwards.
“It’s a wonderful service and very rewarding to be a part of. You know you’re helping someone and providing companionship for them.”
Po takes great satisfaction in meeting new people through the scheme, helping stay connected with the community.
She added: “It’s a chance for me to make new friends too.”
It supports all kinds of people from older residents to people with mobility challenges and much more. Users can book the service to attend appointments, social visits and even for a trip to the supermarket.
The charity is also hoping Po’s story will inspire more women to volunteer as Po is currently the only female driver supporting the service.
Sarah Britton, the charity’s services coordinator, said: ” We have amazing volunteers who really love helping people in their community.
“We are a small team but make such a difference and it’s so rewarding to see the positive impact our volunteers and service make every day.
“We always appreciate new volunteers, whether it is for driving, being an escort or helping with the bookings, but we would especially love some more female volunteers.
“She has a busy life and still works but finds our flexible approach very easy to manage as she tells us when she has a few hours spare to drive for us. We need more Po’s.”
The community transport service operates from 8.30am to 4.30pm from Monday to Friday. The service and volunteer drivers operate during those hours on the whole, but can be flexible from 8am to 6pm.
Volunteers are required to use their own vehicle, however petrol is covered under the scheme.
Residents can call 01905 779 778 to pre-book or visit the charity at The Old Library during the services open hours
