Droitwich Cycling Club members impress in road race season opener

Droitwich Editorial 1st Jul, 2022   0

DROITWICH Cycling Club made an outstanding start to the local road racing season in midweek.

A total of five Droitwich riders took part in the first round of the TLI Worcestershire Road Race series over 30 miles on the challenging Defford circuit.

There were 30 starters in the race and, after repeated attacks and breakaways, the finish came down to a bunch sprint over the last 200-metres.

And three Droitwich riders finished in the top-10 places with Rikky Hughes sixth, Stephen Cavey eighth and Luke Allen 10th.

Unfortunately, Marcus Bufton made an early exit due to mechanical trouble and Matt Overs finished outside of the points.

The next round of the five-race series takes place on the flat and fast Pinvin circuit next Wednesday, July 6 with the race likely to be more suited to the Droitwich riders.

Elsewhere, Paul Mansfield won the Wyre Forest CRC event on the hilly Witley course despite suffering a slow puncture near the end.

At Droitwich CC’s own club time trial on the Himbleton 10-mile course, Hughes was again in action as he claimed the win from Ian Hunt (DCC) and Gary Jones (Success Cycling).

Jess Posnett was yet again the fastest female rider and Nick Blackham was the fastest road bike rider.
