THE DROITWICH division of a military charity has been forced to close its doors after almost four decades.
The Spa branch of the SSAFA (formally the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) has been merged with those in Pershore and Evesham to form the newly constituted ‘Wychavon Division’.

Gloria Newman, the outgoing Divisional Secretary of the Droitwich Division, said: “I am saddened that this has had to happen after a presence of almost 38 years in Droitwich town during which we have raised the profile of SSAFA and fund-raised, not only in order to cover the costs of the casework, but to be able to help local people from our own local funds from time to time.
“It has been a privilege to be able to offer support and help to a great number of veterans and their dependants over those years.
“I give my grateful thanks to the very loyal and hardworking people who have helped fulfil SSAFA’s aims to help the serving and ex-serving members of HM Forces and their dependants within the Droitwich area over these many years.”
The SSAFA provides life-long support to men and women who are currently serving for or are veterans of the British Army, Royal Navy or Royal Air Force.
The organisation also assists servicemen and women’s families or dependants.
Help can range from offering welfare advice, housing or healthcare to directing those being assisted to other organisations who offer more specialised support.
Among the issues SSAFA helps servicemen, women, veterans and their families with are day-to-day living needs, along with addiction, debt and relationship breakdown.
SSAFA assists those who need its help get their life back on track.
