VETERANS, families, civic dignitaries and people living in Droitwich gathered around the War Memorial in Victoria Square to pay their respects on Remembrance Sunday.

More than 1,000 people arrived to watch the poignant service led by Rev Nigel Byard and the parade organised by the Droitwich Royal British Legion.

Music, performed by the Droitwich Salvation Army band, began proceedings, followed by speeches, prayers, hymns, The Last Post, a two-minute silence The Reveille and the laying of around 120 wreaths.

Alan Humphries, Chairman of the Droitwich RBL, said: “It is always an honour to be involved in these services to recognise the fallen and those who came back with significant injuries, physically and mentally.

“It is a great testament to Droitwich Spa with how well this service went and how well it was attended.”

The crowd filtered out of the square just before 11.30am to make their way to St Andrew’s Church for another more personal service.

Coun Bob Brookes, Chairman of Droitwich Spa Town Council, said: “It was amazing to see the number of people who turned out for the service of remembrance, it is very moving.”
