THE FIRST Droitwich salt in almost a century is set to be officially launched at the town’s Salt Fest.
Churchfields Farm, the official producer and distributor of Droitwich’s famous salt, will sell its range of products at the annual event which takes place next Saturday and Sunday, September 9 to 10.
As well as the Pure Droitwich Salt, Salted Butter, Salted Caramel Ice Cream and Salted Fudge made by Wychbold Fudge will also be available to buy.
Held in Vines Park the festival celebrates the town’s unique brine heritage, giving visitors the chance to find out about how and when it was discovered and how it has been used throughout the centuries.
Coun Richard Morris, chairman of the Droitwich Spa Brine Heritage Group and Wychavon’s portfolio holder for economic growth and housing for Wychavon, said: “This is a really momentous Salt Fest as for the first time in 100 years Droitwich pure brine salt goes back on sale.
“We are so thrilled at the professional job Churchfields Farms is doing at bringing this product to market.”
Gillian Kerton, of Churchfields Farm (inset with husband Will), added: “Having the opportunity to bring this incredibly pure salt to market is a great honour. As a local business we’re thrilled to be putting Droitwich on the culinary and heritage map.”
Starting on the Saturday at 10.30am, visitors will be treated to a variety of entertainment and activities including getting to ‘meet the Romans’ through living history displays, canal boat trips, circus skills, art and craft activities for all ages, trade stalls and inflatables.
One of the signature elements of Salt Fest will once again be present – the real ale and cider bar within the marquee which also accommodates the festival’s live entertainment.
Among the events will be a youth showcase where visitors can enjoy listening to local talent right up to 10pm. There will be more fun on Sunday, including the duck race at 4.15pm and live music until the curtain comes down on the festival at 6pm.
Next weekend, as well as officially launching the salt in its source town, Churchfields is also taking the product to Ludlow’s famous food festival, one of the most noteworthy in the culinary calendar.
Patrick Davis, organiser of the Droitwich Food Festival, said: “It’s fantastic to launch this amazing salt at our local festival, but to take it to Ludlow as well is a real bonus.
“We’ll be making sure some of the best chefs in the country are offered the opportunity to try this unique product which will start to put Droitwich Spa on the foodie map.”
