Droitwich fireman to do 21-mile Waterways Walk for St Richard's Hospice

AN INTREPID fireman from Droitwich will be undertaking the 21-mile Waterways Walk in full uniform next Sunday (August 17) to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice.

Peter Doran, who is 49, will be pacing the flat circular route along the River Severn from Droitwich Spa Marina to Diglis in Worcester before returning to the town along the restored Worcester and Birmingham Canal.

Peter, who has been a fireman for over 27 years, will be passing no less than 41 locks on his route back.

As well as the 21-mile trek, there is an alternative 11-mile route from Droitwich Spa Marina along the River Severn, finishing at Diglis, Worcester.

Peter, who has never taken on such a challenge before, has been inspired by his close friend Elaine Tesho.

She is also from Droitwich and is organising a range of fund-raising events for the hospice which is currently caring for her sister Lisa.

Peter’s challenge is part of Elaine’s ‘Carry on Fundraising’ series of events.

Others have included a race night at the Star and Garter which was held on July 26, a pub crawl around Droitwich scheduled for September 2 and a bag-packing session at Morrisons in Droitwich on December 14.

Peter said: “I wanted to help Elaine and Lisa to raise money for St Richard’s as they have been treated very well by the hospice and want to raise money so that other patients and their families can benefit from its peaceful setting and compassionate care.

“I’m expecting it to be quite a challenge to walk such a distance in all my fireman’s equipment, but it’s all for a good cause.”

The Waterways Walk, now in its fourth year, is kindly sponsored by Droitwich Spa Marina.
