A DROITWICH grandmother has raised £1,500 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund after walking 102 miles along the Cotsworld Way.

It took Val Hawley six months to complete, starting in Chipping Camden and finishing at Bath Abbey.

Val was joined on each leg of the walk by local friends and ex-work colleagues, while husband Steve provided a taxi service to the start and finish of each section.

“I wanted to do something beneficial as well as enjoying the beautiful countryside, so I asked family and friends to sponsor me,” she said.

“I set a target of raising £1000 but I am so delighted to find that I have raised £1500 which I am sure will help towards the JDR funds.”

Val’s granddaughter, Esme, aged 10, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was six-years-old.

Val said the news hit her family hard at the time but she used it as motivation during the walk.

Esme and her family say they received wonderful support from the Birmingham Children’s Hospital and continue to do so.
