Droitwich Inner Wheel gives Worcestershire Young Carers some respite on the Pamela May

THE PRESIDENT of the Inner Wheel of Droitwich Spa has selected her charity for the coming year.

Glenys Griffiss has chosen Young Carers and Neil Phillips, an ex-Droitwich High School pupil but now team manager for Worcestershire Young Carers, paid the club a visit and was able to explain the organisation’s work.

The 2011 Census showed in Worcestershire 3,490 children and young people between the ages of seven and 25 identified themselves as young carers and young adult carers.

Children and young people under 18 who provide regular care and emotional support to a family member due to physical or learning disability, mental health issues or long-term illness are in need of a great deal of support.

The majority of young carers are caring for a parent in a single family household and have no social life. They often miss school due to their caring role.

There are 383 ongoing cases who have had to go through a referral process and within 30 days were visited by a key worker for one to one support. Princess Anne is a supporter and has visited three or four times.

As a special treat Droitwich Spa Inner Wheel sponsored a trip on the Pamela May canal boat for nine young carers.

They met in Vines Park and the crew.

Steve, James and Mike let them experience taking the helm and working the locks during their journey.

They thoroughly enjoyed the trip and hoped there would be another chance to travel on the Pamela May again.

Ice creams at the Marina added to their enjoyment.

Droitwich Spa Inner Wheel will endeavour to raise funds for the youngsters so that they may have more enjoyable experiences.

President Glenys and Inner Wheel members were present to wave off the Pamela May.
