A NEW community awards scheme is being launched across Droitwich Spa to honour local heroes in memory of the town’s famed Pilgrim Father, Edward Winslow.
Individuals and charitable or voluntary groups can receive nominations across four awards, all of which celebrate people and organisations making a difference in their community.
The Winslow Community Champion is for individuals ‘giving their time and energy freely whilst leading by example’ in all their voluntary work across Droitwich.
Groups ‘advocating for providing charitable support and giving in the town’ can be put forward for the Winslow Champions Award.
‘Unsung heroes who work tirelessly to support the community’ can be nominated for the Winslow Endeavor Award.
And lastly, ‘individuals giving years of dedicated service’ to Droitwich through the giving of time and effort can be shortlisted for the Edward Winslow Salt of the Earth Award.
Visit the Droitwich Spa Town Council website to cast your votes on the homepage. Nominations are now open and will close on October 31.
The new awards scheme forms part of this year’s Edward Winslow celebrations in Droitwich Spa. Expanded for this year, the event will take place over three days in celebration of one of
Droitwich’s most prominent and historically significant residents from the 17th century.
The event celebrates the life and times of the Droitwich born man who became one of the first English natives to set sail for the shores of the United States, on the Mayflower Ship, from Plymouth in England, in 1620.
Kicking off on November 27, the festivities give a nod to Winslow’s involvement in the first ever Thanksgiving dinner in Plymouth, Massachusetts on that same day in 1621.
The event will include festivities on Friday, November 28 and Saturday, November 29. Among the celebrations will be a United States of America flag raising, exhibitions including interactive experiences, live music, entertainment, displays, Thanksgiving meals across the town, a statue dressing, a church service and more.
Again, for this year, the event will encourage attendees to make donations to local foodbanks and community pantries across the town.
