Droitwich Mayor had busy and fulfilling November

Droitwich Editorial 4th Dec, 2016   0

TWO WORTHWHILE charities celebrated their anniversaries this month.

Troop Aid, a charity providing essential and much appreciated services for British troops engaged in operations worldwide, held its tenth anniversary ball at the Chateau Impney Hotel.

Troop Aid is a small charity with a worldwide reach and supplies ‘grab bags’ containing donated basic essentials to injured service personnel upon their return to the UK. The bags are also supplied to Military Defence Hospital Units in Cyprus and Ministry of Defence Hospital Units in the UK.

A salute by the Royal Logistic Corps, the largest regiment of the British Army, was given at the ball and there was entertainment by the Cosford Military Wives choir, an auction and raffles. A memorable occasion.

Also in November, the Alzheimer’s Society celebrated its first year providing an essential service with a get-together at the Droitwich Community Centre. Meeting centres offer a person-centred approach to support people living with dementia and their carers.

People living with dementia can attend up to three days per week and take part in recreational and social activities.

A support programme is provided by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers.

The Society aims to improve the quality of life of people affected by dementia. The Meeting Centre movement has been successful in the Netherlands for over ten years and Droitwich was the first in the UK to have one.

On Saturday I was joined by our very own Paramlympic silver medallist Rebecca Redfern to switch on the Christmas lights.

An appreciative audience enjoyed performances by Westacre Middle School, the Rock Choir and the Salvation Army Band provided festive music. The finale was a well-attended carol service led by the Community Choir in St Andrews Church.

Our French and German Twinning Societies held their AGMs – Voiron is the French town and Bed Ems is the German one twinned with Droitwich.

Both societies have existed for many years. At the AGM David Morris was elected Chairman of the German Twinning Society and Mike Nott will continue as the French Twinning Society’s Chairman for another year.
