THERE will be a very special occasion a week on Monday (May 16) when the annual Droitwich Mayor Making event takes place and former councillor Mike Barratt receives a prestigious title.
Mr Barratt will become an Honorary Alderman of the town after an extraordinary meeting of the council last month.
The award will recognise the service he has given to Droitwich as an elected member of the Town Council and for his meritorious services to the town in both a civic and non-civic capacity.
Mr Barratt was elected to the town council in 1983, was town mayor five times and served on Wychavon District Council from 1987 during which time he had a stint as chairman.
He has been chairman of the Coventry Trust, the Council for Voluntary Services, was a Justice of the Peace for many years and, once retired from that, volunteered to be a ‘responsible adult’ when the police was dealing with youth offenders.
The proposal to make Mr Barratt an Alderman was made by by Coun Tom Noyes, has the full backing of all members of the town council.
Coun Noyes said: “Mike has given several lifetimes of service to the town of Droitwich Spa.
“We at the Town Council will be honouring this in the best way we consider possible.”
The meeting on May 16, which will also see Coun Roy Murphy take over from Mayor Coun Graham Beale, starts at 5.45pm in the Community Hall, Heritage Way.
It will be followed by the Annual Meeting of the Town Council.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
