A DROITWICH man who is a member of a motorcycle group which supports hospitals across the Midlands gave a talk to the town’s Rotary Club.

Peter Johnson spoke about the Severn Freewheelers which saves the NHS thousands of pounds by providing a night time service delivering emergency items, which cannot be transmitted electronically between hospitals and homes.

They have about 310 calls and cover some 1,2000 miles each month, preventing the hospitals from having to use taxis.

The volunteer riders operate across the county, including Redditch’s Alexandra, the Worcestershire Royal, and Bromsgrove’s Princess of Wales Community Hospital, along with Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and north Wiltshere.

Members even go as far as south Birmingham and Coventry, operating between 7pm and 7am on weekdays and 24 hours at weekends and public holidays. By September 2016, the charity had covered over 1,175,000 miles and had responded to more than 30,000 calls.

Among the items they transport are samples for pathological or micro-biological analysis, blood and blood products for transfusion, patient notes, drugs, scans and medical equipment.

A recent development has been the collection of human breast milk from donors’ homes and its transport to human milk banks at Oxford, Bristol and Birmingham.

The Droitwich Rotary Club gave a donation to the organisation.
