DROITWICH’S Poundland is set to close after just two years open for business.
The Poundland store on St Andrews Square will close for the final time on Tuesday, December 9.
The Droitwich store began its clearance sale today (Tuesday, October 28), two years to the day since it first opened its doors.
A spokesperson for the discount chain said the Droitwich closure is happening due to a lease expiry, with Poundland continuing a programme to ‘simplify its retail network’ around its ‘best-performing sites.’
Its clearance sale is offering reductions of up to 40 per cent, with items marked down in price until they’re sold.
Last month, Poundland ended its main 68-store closure programme, closing 57 stores by 28 September 28 and placing a further 11 closures on hold.
However, the firm said it still expects to operate around 650 to 700 stores, compared to around 800 at the start of the restructuring programme, as leases expire or landlords exercise any option to serve notice.
Poundland’s UK country manager, Darren MacDonald, said: “We know how disappointing it is when we leave a store, but before we close our doors for a final time, we’re determined to say goodbye by offering even more amazing value to customers.
“The special reductions, on top of the value we provide in every store, will help us leave locations we’re leaving with pride. “And when we close our doors, we look forward to welcoming customers to one of the hundreds of Poundland stores we’ll continue to operate right across the UK.”
Droitwich Poundland opened in October 2023, replacing the former Wilko store, with roles being prioritised for those made redundant by the closure of the previous store.
It is one of 10 additional stores across the country shutting its doors before the end of the year.
