DROITWICH residents inspired by Team GB’s fantastic performance at the Rio Olympics will be able to follow in the footsteps of the nation’s finest athletes after a sport scheme was extended until next year.
The £300,000 Wychavon Get Active Scheme is aimed at getting adults to be more active and change their lifestyles for the better. Lottery cash from Sport England, totalling £150,000, and almost £24,000 of remaining lottery funding and an extra £1,000 from Wychavon District Council will now mean the programme will run until March 2017.
Since its launch in 2013, more than 16,000 people have participated in a variety of sports and activities, including cardio tennis, dragon boating, parkour and indoor climbing.
As well as community roadshows, the project has also seen discounted swimming, dance and tennis sessions offered and funded 36 ‘Couch to 5K’ sessions which have inspired 800 people to take up running.
