Droitwich residents urged to check they're not using a fly-tipper

DROITWICH residents are being urged to check the companies they use to take away their waste are properly licensed following a spate of fly-tipping.

Wychavon District Council have had more than 100 incidents in the last two months including household goods left in pathways, furniture dumped near the M5 and bags full of asbestos left near a lay-by, which required specialist contractors to remove.

The council’s officers are investigating each case and are targeting 20 hotspots where they believe there is significant problem.

They recently carried out spot checks on vehicles carrying waste and were joined by police and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency to ensure the motorists were licensed.

Coun Emma Stokes, portfolio holder for environment and street scene on Wychavon District Council, said: “We need the support of residents to help tackle this problem. If anyone sees someone dumping waste or has any other information connected to fly-tipping then please let us know. Residents can also help by only using reputable companies to dispose of their waste.

“Fly-tipping is not a harmless crime. It costs the taxpayer and landowners money to deal with, inconveniences the public and in some cases can be dangerous. Where we find evidence we will always prosecute and there are several we are in the process of investigating at the moment.”
