Droitwich residents urged to find out more about new cohousing scheme for older people

OLDER residents from can find out about a new cohousing development in Bradley Green at a special open day.

The event, between 10am and 2pm next Saturday, August 17, will shed light on The Lion and Lamb cohousing scheme, Droitwich Road, which is aimed at bringing like-minded people aged 55 and over together to create their own supportive and caring community.

Visitors can find out how to become part of the unique living scheme which is growing in popularity across Europe.

People can buy their own home – there are two one bedroom and eight two bedroom homes available – and have joint ownership over shared living and green spaces.

Residents then decide together how they are developed and they could include allotments, greenhouses, a computer room, library, shared lounge and kitchen, visitor accommodation and even a play area for when grandchildren drop in.

Residents can still maintain their privacy and independence while having the opportunity to socialise and know they have the support of their neighbours.

Two of the properties will be affordable for the benefit of local people and will remain so throughout the lifetime of the development.

Wychavon is supporting the project by helping to form the group that will live in and manage the scheme as part of its community-led housing drive.

Cohousing began in Denmark in 1972 and initially spread to Sweden, Netherlands and Germany before sweeping across other parts of Europe and then into America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

To date there are about 70 schemes in the UK either being lived in or in development and this will be Wychavon’s first.
