People are asked to watch the birds in their garden or another local area if they do not have a garden for an hour and record the number of each species they see.

Common British birds to look out for are the Blackbird – which isn’t always black, the blue tit, with its colourful mix of blue, yellow, white and green, and the Chaffinch with its distinctive black and white flashes on its wings.

Plus there’s the Collared dove, Goldfinch and Dunnock, and of course the Robin, Sparrow and Starling plus many more.

To join in with the Big Garden Bird Watch and find out more about the different birds you are likely to see, simply click here.

People can also get ideas of how to attract birds to their gardens, with regard to foods to put out and whereabouts on their plot to place it,
