MEMBERS of Droitwich Spa Royal British Legion gathered at the town’s war memorial on Saturday to commemorate VJ Day.
Due to Covid-19, the event was extremely low profile with only invited guests and members of the legion involved.
Legion chair, Coun Alan Humphries, said: “We had hoped to have a larger gathering but at one time feared there would be none at all.
“Having missed the opportunity to commemorate VE Day, we felt it vital that the end of hostilities in 1945 should be acknowledged in some way. So we are grateful for the small event.
“I would like to thank all those who attended for marking the day and my fellow committee members for the making it possible.
“And would also like to thank the local police and the Town Council for their guidance in setting the event up.”
Coun Humphries added he was pleased to see members of the public, who stopped to pay their respects as they walked by, observing social distancing.
A decision on whether or not the public will be allowed to attend this year’s Remembrance Sunday will be made soon.
