Droitwich Rugby Club celebrates 50 years

Droitwich Editorial 29th Sep, 2022   0

DROITWICH Rugby Club celebrated its 50th anniversary last Saturday (September 24).

Around 100 people had gathered for the celebration, which included matches, food and live music in the evening.

Iain Thomas, Chairmen of the club, said: “It was a really good day with past and present players and the original founders.

“We wanted to make it a big celebration of people who came before us, who without we would not be here.”

The club was first set up in 1972, with players initially using Witton Middle School as a changing room.

Their first match was in November of that year, and throughout the years, they were located in different venues, including the Old Droitwich Fire Station.

In 1998, the club reached its current venue down Hanbury Road, which still reflects the club’s history, with one of the grounds

named after the founder of the club, Glyn Mitchell.

This is the first of a few celebrations the club has planned, and in November, they will be recreating their first-ever match.
