Droitwich schools urged to join Dr Ranj for Big First Aid Lesson Live

Droitwich Editorial 31st May, 2016 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016

SCHOOLS in Worcestershire are being urged to join in with St John Ambulance’s Big First Aid Lesson Live, which will be taking place next month.

Hosted by TV medic Dr Ranj, the free, interactive hour-long programme will be filmed and streamed in front of a live audience of students and directly to classrooms via the internet on Friday, June 17.

St John Ambulance is hoping teachers will sign up for their classes to take part and help it meet its aim of teaching 250,000 students vital life saving skills on that day.

There will be two lessons being streamed – one for primary schools and one for secondary schools.

The Big First Aid Lesson Live will cover a wide range of topics including choking, chest pains, seizures and insect bites. There will be live demonstrations, intriguing life stories, chances for the students to ask questions and plenty of other interactive opportunities.

Dr Ranj said: “As a doctor, I know only too well how important first aid can be in an emergency.

“Being able to immediately help someone – a family member, a school mate, a neighbour, or even a stranger – can be life saving.

“But you don’t have to be a medic like me to learn or use it.”

Dr Ranj added he was supporting the St John scheme because anyone of any age could learn first aid.

“I’m excited to be hosting this year, as I know the lesson will help enrich the next generation with the confidence and knowledge to save a life.”

The only equipment schools need to take part is an Internet connection and a screen (such as an interactive whiteboard) for the students to watch in the classroom or during an assembly.

Sue Killen, CEO, St John Ambulance said: ‘The Big First Aid Lesson Live is an accessible, easy to learn, and fun resource- students will finish the lesson feeling confident they could one day be a life saver.

“I encourage each and every school to take part so their pupils do not miss out on this exciting and educational event.”
