Droitwich Soccer Aid is back for it's second leg this weekend

Droitwich Editorial 7th Jun, 2023   0

DROITWICH soccer aid is back- and this year will be raising cash for Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven.

The event, now in its second year, will kick off at 3pm on Saturday (June 10) at Droitwich Rugby Club.

This year’s charity was chosen after one of the player’s sisters recently had to have a double mastectomy, although she’s now recovering.

The Worcestershire Breast Unit charity supports women across the county who have breast cancer, with the haven on the site of Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Gordon Wilcox and his wife June, who lost their daughter Kate to breast cancer aged 42 in 2018, will be handing out the trophy on the day.

Kate worked tirelessly to raise awareness and funds for the Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven through a charity she set up, Breast Unit Events.

Simon Graham, who helped organise soccer aid, said: “I was doing work at Gordon and June’s house as an electrician, but their daughter’s story wasn’t mentioned until afterwards when I heard about it through someone else.

“We talked about it, had a bit of a cry together and they agreed to come- it seemed like destiny.”

As well as the match, this year’s event will also see a fun fair at the rugby club from 10am as well as a bar and barbecue, face painting and ice cream.

There will also be a sports memorabilia auction after the game as well as an evening of live music and a disco.

Last year’s event saw Droitwich Veterans beating the Droitwich seniors 3-1 while raising £5,000 Orchid-Fighting Male Cancer.

Veterans player Steve Pitts was the inspiration for the match having developed testicular cancer during lockdown.

He suffered in silence until his family made him go to the doctor, and he did not tell his friends about his condition until the lockdown had ended.

He was swiftly diagnosed upon going to the doctor and was able to have surgery.

And having raised cash and awareness for testicular cancer last year, Simon said he hopes this year’s event can do the same for its chosen cause.
