Droitwich Spa Foodbank volunteer wants others to 'lace up their trainers' for the Race Against Hunger

A DROITWICH Spa Foodbank volunteer and runner is urging fellow residents to lace up their trainers and join her in taking on the Race Against Hunger.

Mary Stanbury, also a trustee of the foodbank, will take up the challenge alongside her husband in memory of several foodbank volunteers – Jacqui, her husband Barry and Project Manager Dave – who have all sadly passed away recently.

The Race Against Hunger, taking place on April 2, will raise funds for anti-poverty charity Trussell Trust.

Fund-raisers can plan their own route and take on the event at a time that suits them either on their own or with families, friends, colleagues or their school.

Organisers say it is an opportunity for everyone to ‘put their foot down on UK poverty’ and join the Race Against Hunger.

The Trussell Trust, which fights for a more just society where everyone can afford the essentials, will provide everyone signing up with training guides and support, a t-shirt, a back sign and ribbon armband to wear on the day. Participants will be crossing the finishing line with #TeamTrussell.

Mary said: “We want to increase the services Droitwich Spa Foodbank can offer to the local community.

“Since we become part of the network in 2014, the Trussell Trust has helped us a lot in making sure we could provide the best support to local people.

“We know nationally and locally more people are struggling and have to make impossible decisions between eating and heating.

“I think people shouldn’t be experiencing hunger or feeling cold – this shouldn’t be happening in our country.”

The Trussell Trust supports a nationwide network of more than 1,300 food bank centres which together provide emergency food and support to help people in crisis.

The charity is campaigning for change to create a future where no one needs to use a foodbank to get by.

By supporting Race Against Hunger, people in Droitwich Spa and beyond are helping the charity fight hunger and end the need for foodbanks in the UK.
