MEMBERS OF Droitwich Spa French Twinning Group have been practicing their skills in the French game of petanque ahead of their visit to the twinned town of Voiron.
Droitwich members joined each other at Gaudet Luce Golf Club last weekend for the game of petanque, a French variation of the British sport – boules.
The Droitwich Spa French Twinning Group (DSFTG) faced off in friendly competition ahead of the annual twin town meet up, which this year will be held in May in Voiron, near the French city of Grenoble – in the Isère department in southeastern France.
At last year’s meeting, Droitwich members were ‘handsomely’ beaten by their French counterparts and are hoping to put up more of fight during their next visit.
A spokesperson for Droitwich Spa French Twinning Group said: “The group were keen to improve their skills at the game because last year they were handsomely beaten by the French.
“After practicing for an hour or more, there was definite progress. The English are ready now. Let the battle commence.”
To mark the twinning, charters between the two towns were signed in Voiron in November 2010, and in Droitwich Spa in April 2011. The first exchange took place in April 2012.
In Droitwich Spa there are two twinning groups, linking the spa town with both Voiron in France and Bad Ems in Germany. The link with Bad Ems was established much earlier, in 1983.
Both twinning groups are members of the Droitwich Spa Twinning Association and are autonomous, self-funded and independent of the town, district or county council.
