HISTORY was made at the Annual Droitwich meeting tonight when Coun George Duffy became the town’s youngest ever mayor.

Coun Duffy, who is 25, takes over from Coun Bill Moy who has held the role for the past three years because of the pandemic.

Coun Duffy, who is also a Wychavon District Councillor, is following in his mum Lynne’s footsteps – she was Mayor of Droitwich Spa from 2010 to 2011.

George said: “I love meeting people and finding out about all the groups in the town so I think I’m going to enjoy this role.

“Most of the people I meet are through town council events and activities and it is about finding out from the people of the town what they would like to see happen.”

George will have his partner Andrea by his side as his consort for his year in office and has chosen the Droitwich CVS and the Droitwich Waterways Pamela May Trust as his chosen charities for the next 12 months.

The CVS helps those in need and was extremely instrumental in getting support to vulnerable people during the pandemic.

The Pamela May 2 offers canal cruises to disadvantaged residents, which helps give them time away from their daily struggles and boosts mental health.

Lynne, George’s mum and former councillor and mayor, added: “We are all so proud of him – he always had a passion for local politics and attended a lot of the events when I was mayor.

“I think he will be unique and get a lot of young people involved in all the events and activities.

“It might also help get young people into local politics which is what we need.”

George echoed those sentiments, adding: “I am hoping we can use this year – a time of reopening – to get more people involved with the town and its events and that starts with the young people.”

He thanked Coun Moy for his previous three years in office and praised him and other councillors and officers for the work they did for the council and for being good role models.

Coun.Moy reflected on the last three years, joking: “It went from eminency to obscurity by the end but I have been so pleased and proud to serve our town in this way.”

Coun Kate Fellows was voted in as the Deputy Mayor of Droitwich Spa.
