Droitwich Spa Heritage & Information Centre gets mammoth funding boost

DROITWICH Spa Heritage and Information Centre is delighted to announce its successful application for grant funding to enhance the site.

The centre has been awarded £130,000 from Wychavon’s Community Legacy Grant Scheme to enable its expansion and enhancement.

Plans include modernising the centre and improving its accessibility and interest.

A spokesperson for Droitwich Spa Heritage and Information Centre said: “The funds will enable us to expand and update to give it a new lease of life.

“The centre was opened in St Richards House in 1990 and is now looking tired.

“The Salt Museum is congested and outdated. It is in need of reinterpretation to make it more accessible, inviting and interesting to a wider audience.”

Organisers have also expressed a view to improve the Droitwich Calling exhibition or radio room as its more affectionately known. They feel it is hidden down an univiting corridor and doorway.

A spokesperson added: “It is very overcrowded and the stories which we are trying to tell have become lost.

“This exhibition space needs streamlining and artefacts need to be cherry picked in order to focus the narrative of the space on the Wychbold Transmitting station and tell the story of ‘Droitwich in the Dial’.”

Overall, Droitwich Spa Heritage and Information Centre is aimed to be transformed into a space for ‘all generations and cultures to connect’ to Droitwich’s history in an enjoyable and engaging way.

This is hoped to be achieved by creating a welcoming, multi-sensory experience with improved layouts and a maximised space offering comprehensive information.

A new permanent exhibition space is planned for use by community groups.

Plans for the development were unveiled by the centre’s managers at a Droitwich Spa Town Council meeting back in February and later submitted for funding consideration by Wychavon District Council.

The plans received welcome support from Droitwich Spa Town Council representatives before the full plans were submitted.
