DROITWICH SPA High School students kicked off the town’s 2017 ArtsFest with a showcase in St Andrew’s Church on the opening day of the festival.

Students performed to a packed-out church, where an array of groups showcased their talents; Chamber Ensemble opened proceedings with Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’, followed by excerpts from Handel’s ‘Water Music’ – played to mark the 300th anniversary of the premiere of his work.

Proceedings then moved to the Jazz Band, which played a mixture of pieces, featuring saxophone solos from Joe Harrison. The Saxophone Quartet then took to the stage to give an energetic performance of ‘Welcome Dance’ by Karen Street, and a lively rendition of ‘The Pink Panther’ by Mancini.

Two student led groups performed also – ‘The Improvs’, a mixed year group ensemble, featuring Amy Deane, Charlotte Mortimer, Eleanor Bradley, Vicki Embleton, Joe Harrison, Tom Griffiths and Kanon Misawa gave a moving performance of ‘Stay With Me’ by Sam Smith.

‘The Shakespeare Boyz’ also showed their talent with members George Forrester, Joe Harrison, Toby Barker and Evelyn Gill performing.

Several talented musicians also gave some exceptional solos and duets; Tom Griffiths, Eleanor Bradley, Charlotte Mortimer, Kanon Misawa, Jade Parkins, Jack Degenkolb and Evelyn Gill all showed immense confidence.

Head of creative arts Nick Wardle said: “I am very proud of our students as they have demonstrated both a commitment to rehearsing regularly and an eagerness to get up on stage.

“He went on to thank staff and students for all of their involvement, enthusiasm and hard work.”
