DROITWICH Spa High School has issued an update after it was forced to close for ’emergency gas repairs.’

Staff at the school have confirmed that students will be free to return to school tomorrow (Wednesday, January 21) after having to spend today at home.

The required emergency repairs resulting in no heating, hot water, or catering facilities.

A statement from the school said that the decision was made as they needed to prioritise health and safety above all else.

However, parents have now been informed that their youngsters can return to in-person learning.

An email sent to parents on Monday, seen by the Standard, said: “On Monday afternoon, our gas engineers were called out to investigate an issue discovered by our Site Manager.

“They have confirmed that some emergency repair work needs to be done and that the gas supply across the site must be shut down.

“We must consider the health and safety of our staff and students, both in terms of the repair works being completed and the access to heating, hot water, and catering.

“As a result, we will have no choice but to close the school on Tuesday, January 20.

“We appreciate that this decision may be frustrating for parents and students, but we must prioritise health and safety above all else.”

A further update as to whether the school will need to be closed for longer than a day is expected later this afternoon.

Engineers are hopeful that the issue can be quickly resolved.

Staff set work for students to complete via Teams, and teachers were available via email to offer support during lessons.
