Droitwich Spa Hospital celebrates rich 40 year history

A DROITWICH hospital is celebrating a major milestone this summer as it marks 40 years of providing care to the local community.

Opened in July 1985, the hospital – then known as The Worcestershire Clinic and Brine Bath – was a purpose-built independent facility with a unique offering – a natural brine pool.

The pool was part of a spa-like setting that included a sauna, gym, and even a drinks menu, paying homage to Droitwich Spa’s status as the only saltwater spa town in Britain.

Though the brine bath closed in 2009 due to rising maintenance costs, it remains a cherished part of the hospital’s heritage, tracing its roots back to John Corbett’s original St Andrew’s Brine Baths, established in 1887.

At the heart of the hospital’s success are its people – many of whom have dedicated their entire careers to serving the local community.

Barbara Parkes, who began as a Nurse Auxiliary at just 17, remembers the day Earl and Lady Spencer officially opened the hospital.

Now the outpatient sister, she said: “It’s the team; everyone works hard and looks out for each other, it truly feels like family. We always take pride in doing our best for our patients.”

Gary Colley, who started as a pool attendant 36 years ago, has since worked across multiple departments including leisure services and is now a vital member of the hospital’s Materials team.

“The hospital has grown and changed a lot, but the teamwork and care has remained the same,” he said. “It’s more than just a job for me; it’s where I belong.”

Throughout its 40-year history, the hospital has maintained a strong community spirit—not just in healthcare, but in charitable giving.

Through Circle Health Group’s ‘Giving Something Back’ initiative, the hospital has donated to organisations including St Richard’s Hospice, MIND, and Macmillan Cancer Care.

Claire Davenport, executive director of Droitwich Spa Hospital, reflected on the hospital’s legacy.

She said: “I feel very proud to be leading the team and the hospital in its 40th year. Over the past 40 years we have been at the heart of our community and have also raised thousands of pounds for charities locally and nationally.

“We look forward to playing an integral role in the local health economy for many years to come. Here’s to the next 40.”
