DROITWICH Spa Town Council has become one of the first local authorities to sign the Armed Forces Covenant, a declaration of support for military veterans and their families.
The Armed Forces Covenant was signed by various council representatives at a full meeting of Droitwich Spa Town Council on Monday 26 September.
It focuses on helping members of the Armed Forces community ensure they face no disadvantage compared to other citizens when it comes to public and commercial services.
This is carried out by providing support for veterans and their families with education, well-being, career support, healthcare, financial services and permanent residence.
All council representatives at the meeting voted in favour of signing the covenant in solidarity with the armed forces veterans of Droitwich and further afield.
The council has also approached the Ministry of Defence to ask a representative to attend the next full meeting of the council on December 18 to enable a countersignature ceremony.
Councillor Morris said: “Getting back into civilian life can be very difficult.
“The covenant recognises not just the veterans but the families
“Very often they get missed within the story.
“There is a lot of support for the veterans, of course it could be better.
“But for the families, they sit in the fog of what’s happened and suffer every bit of the trauma of their partners.”
Councillor Bob Brookes told the council of his own personal experiences as a loved one of armed forces veterans.
His son served in Iraq and his daughter toured in Afghanistan.
He said: “I am pleased to support this and thank Councillor Morris for bringing it forward.”
