Droitwich St Richard statue hit by vandals

A STATUE in a Droitwich park which was vandalised will cost £380 to repair.

The statue of St Richard blessing the brine well, which has been in Vines Park for more than 80 years, was restored in 2006 but vandals then struck and broke one of the repaired fingers.

Wychavon District Council has once again appointed Carrie Horwood from Cats Eye Carving to carry out the repairs which will take place later this month weather permitting.

Lynn Stevens, Wychavon District Council’s parks officer, said: “We’re very pleased to be able to restore the statue once again, although it is sad that this is necessary due to vandalism.

“We ask all park users and locals to keep a watchful eye please over the statue and call the police if they see or suspect anyone of vandalism.

“St Richard is an important part of the local heritage and we hope the statue can be at its best for the St. Richards festival in May 2015 and beyond.”
