CHILDREN from a Droitwich school are the latest among the future generation to learn about the complex needs of domesticated rabbits as part of Blue Cross’ plans to educate pet owners.

Four, five and six-year-olds at the Ombersley Endowed First School were treated to an in-depth presentation by Blue Cross education officer, Jason Cortis on how best to look after pet bunnies.

According to a recent PDSA report, 53 per cent of rabbit owners lack the requisite knowledge of their pets’ basic care needs.

The Blue Cross talk, arranged by local developer Bromford, hoped to help the younger generation understand how much care and attention domestic pets require as part of Rabbit Awareness Week.

Rabbit Awareness Week has been running for 17 years from June 26 to June 30 and aims to educate rabbit owners on all aspects of their care, and continue to help improve the welfare of rabbits.

During the session, the students learned what the right foods are for rabbits and how to make them feel comfortable and part of the family set up.

Jason then answered students’ questions about what rabbits need from those in their homes.

Daniel Postans, Reception Teacher and Deputy Head at Ombserley Endowed First School, said: “It was great for our reception and key stage 1 pupils to experience an engaging talk from an industry expert who expressed the subject matter in great detail.

“We’d like to thank Bromford for arranging this event, as well as Jason and Blue Cross for delivering the presentation and answering the children’s questions.”

Jason Cortis said: “It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic young faces, with many of the children eager to understand more about what rabbits need.

“I’d like to thank Mr Postans and Bromford for helping to put this together, the children seemed truly invested and had lots of questions.”

Catherine Jarrett, director of sales and marketing at Bromford, said: “We are delighted to have provided this talk to Worcestershire school children and to have celebrated Rabbit Awareness Week

with them.

“We hope that this has helped the children deepen their appreciation for all animals and develop their understanding on how much goes in to catering to their needs.”
