Droitwich students receive a workshop from a West End star

THEATRE stars of the future were in their element last Friday when West End celebrity Tim Prottey Jones dropped by to lead a special workshop at Droitwich Spa High School.
Tim, who recently appeared in Kinky Boots, RENT and Jesus Christ Superstar, has worked with the likes of John Owen Jones, Daniel Boys and Julie Atherton.
The multi-faceted artist came to Droitwich to mentor youngsters enrolled on the Starbuck Theatre Company’s youth training classes.
Artistic director Sarah Pavlovs said: “This was a massive thing for the students. Week on week they work hard, so I like to give opportunities where they can learn from the best in the industry.”
The group made waves lately when they staged the rock opera, RENT at the Malvern Coach House Theatre and are rehearsing for the musical Sister Act.
Olivia Mitchell, 16, sought advice about her solo performance in the show.
She said: “It was really funny and he made me feel comfortable when I sang it. He has a super power when it comes to analysing singing.”
Bethany O’Neill, 19, added: “It was really eye opening to work with a professional who was so down to earth. He made me realise how much more I want to make this my vocation.”
The workshop also inspired younger members, including seven-year old Ellen, who’s mum Amanda said: “Ellen came back full of excitement and couldn’t wait to show us what she’d achieved.
“Her confidence and enthusiasm after the workshop was a joy to see.”
Tim, who stayed to mentor the children for over two hours, has offered to work with the company again.
He said: “I was blown away by the ability and confidence of the Starbuck Theatre students.
“Whilst there was such a range of ages, the quality was consistently high and I look forward to coming to see their next production.”
