Droitwich Team Vicar Laura to take on 100km Zambezi river paddle

A TENACIOUS Droitwich vicar will take on a 100km ‘Through Hell and High Water’ challenge on the Zambezi River next month to raise funds for a charity which helps families in Africa.

Rev Laura Handy will head to Zambia and be part of a team of ten pitching their wits against wild weather conditions and white water rapids and coming face-to-face with hippos and crocodiles.

Her chosen charity Compassion builds homes for mums and babies in Rwanda who are part of the child survival programme.

Each home costs £3,249 and the charity’s aim is to build 34 which will house 173 people in total.

Rev Laura has supported Compassion for the last ten to 15 years and wanted to do something to challenge herself as well as raise money.

She has been training hard, ensuring her core muscles are in the best shape possible and participating in the odd row along the Droitwich canal.

She said: “I know the good the charity does and the impact it has on improving the lives of the people out there.”

She had set a fund-raising target of £500 but already has more than £1,000 so now wants to raise as much money as possible.

“It has all been so overwhelming and I am grateful for any support people can give me.”
