Droitwich Town Council vote to oppose police's parking space plan

Droitwich Editorial 23rd Oct, 2016   0

DROITWICH Town Council has unanimously voted to oppose an application to alter the parking spaces outside the police station.
The proposal by the Warwickshire and West Mercia force would see four new parking spaces created for police vehicles in front of the station, giving access to Ombersley Street East, just to the west of the disabled parking bays.
Coun Pam Davey attended Monday’s planning meeting to urge Droitwich Town Council’s committee to object to the proposal.
She said: “It is almost unbelievable the police should seek to create an access onto what must be one of the most congested and dangerous corners in the town. “
She added when the medical centre sought planning permission in 2005 for disabled spaces to be accessed from Ombersley Street East it was rejected by county highways as it could be obstructed by vehicles parked in the limited time waiting bays and drivers’ visibility would also be impeded.
But she said, now the police had applied for a similar arrangement, highways had raised no objection.
“Ludicrously the application states that, with no ‘front desk facility’ at the police station, having four marked cars on the frontage would make the people of Droitwich feel more secure.”
After consideration, the Droitwich Town Council planning committee agreed the proposal was ‘inappropriate and dangerous’.
And, after a proposal by Coun Tom Noyes, seconded by Coun Bob Brookes, it was unanimously agreed to recommend refusal.
The proposal will now go before Wychavon District Council’s planning committee and residents still have time to have their say by visiting www.wychavon.gov.uk and searching for the planning application number 16/01978.
