Droitwich urged to make the most of the Youth Bus

Droitwich Editorial 13th Sep, 2015 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

A YOUTH bus which serves Fernhill Heath and other villages on its rounds has enjoyed a record breaking year.

The Wychavon District Council vehicle, which is ready to take to the road again, was launched in 2009 to provide leisure activities for young people and reduce anti-social behaviour in more isolated areas of the district.

In the first 12 months, there were just 300 users anf 50 sessions were provided but its popularity has increased dramatically.

During 2014/15, 2,136 eight to 17-year-olds used the bus, up more than 44 per cent on the previous 12 months.

The bus, which is fully kitted out with the latest technology, including a music centre, games consoles and mobile broadband, is paid for from a variety of contributions.

As well as providing a place for young people to relax with friends and enjoy activities, it also offers advice on careers opportunities, sexual health and drug and alcohol awareness.

Among those funding it are Worcestershire County Council’s Positive Activities funding and the Police and Crime Commissioner.

The bus was recently refurbished, using £10,000 worth of Disability Adaptations Funding to make it more accessible to children with a variety of needs.

The money allowed the installation of external lighting, improved folding seating and the addition of a ramp and grab handles to make it more accessible.

The bus is available to hire to parish councils, youth groups and community organisations.
