Droitwich's oldest WI group is saved by new member Sue Cook

THE OLDEST Women’s Institute in Droitwich was dangerously close to having to close its doors, when one of its newest members stepped in to save the day.

Sue Cook only moved to the area in November 2014 and joined WI organisations in May last year but when she heard the Droitwich Spa WI, on Corbett Street, the town’s original WI group, no longer had a president and was therefore at risk of closing just two years before its centenial, she put herself forward.

The previous leader left last summer and when no one had volunteered to fill their shoes by January this year, Mrs Cook offered to take the reigns and the members happily voted her in.

She said: “There really is a need for this group. It is a lifeline for some people and I just really wanted to keep it open.

“It would be such a shame for it to close so close to reaching its 100th year.

“I am hopeful I can keep the enthusiasm going and get some more people to join. We current have 12 members and if I could get it to 18 I would be extremely happy.”

The ladies meet every first Wednesday of the month at the Rotary House and often have visitors speakers and crafts. Visit www.thewi.org.uk/ for more on the Women’s Institute.
