A DROITWICH care home resident has gotten behind the wheel in her first ever driving lesson at the age of 93, writes Isabel Matthews.
Sanctuary care resident, Cicely, recently enjoyed her first driving experience and showed that it’s better late than never to achieve your goals.
Cicely expressed her thoughts with the non-for-profit care home’s activites coordinator, Kate Lockwood, about how she had never driven a car and wished she had.
Cicely, said: “I said I’d never driven and didn’t think I ever could”
“Kate asked if i’d like to try- I couldn’t believe it”
With motivation and encouragement from the team at Westmead residential care home in Droitwich, and guidance from driving instructor Karen Bevan, Cicely was able to fulfil her wish- on private land.
Overwhelmed with pride, Cicely, said: “I felt elated. I couldn’t believe I’d ever do it at my age. Turning the wheel made me feel like I can still do things.”
Karen kindly volunteered her services and offered them free of charge.
Cicely embraced the nerves in the moment and said: “Karen was so lovely-She made me feel confident and gave me my independence. I can’t thank her enough.”
“I’ve done something just for me. If you feel confident and want to achieve something, give it a try-it will feel great.”
Kate Lockwood explained: “At Westmead we are passionate about finding ways to continually enrich the lives for our residents with moments like these, helping them live life to the full and achieve their goals.”
