Droitwich's Dave looks back at 1953 town party for Queen's Coronation

DROITWICH resident Dave Davidson sent in this picture of a party in 1953 to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

It was taken in a house at the top end of Stalls Farm Road, near the Doverdale Arms.

Dave said: “I was only five at the time and can’t remember if it was actually on the day itself.

“I think a group of neighbours banded together to arrange it for the kids and one family provided the space in their home.

“It wasn’t long after the Second World War and meat, bacon, sugar, butter, cheese, margarine, cooking fats and eggs were still rationed.

“I think that an extra ration of sugar and margarine was allowed for celebrating the event.”

He added the Stalls Farm women and girls did an amazing job: “I guess there would have probably have been jelly and blancmange, iced cakes, fairy cakes, Victoria sponge cakes and maybe trifle, tinned fruit and fish paste and spam sandwiches too.”

On the table, there are some of the Queen’s Coronation mugs given out to schoolchildren to mark the occasion.

On the actual event itself Dave added: “I remember watching the Coronation at a neighbour’s on an early telly with a poor picture but a few days or weeks later we could watch a fantastic colour film of at the Salters Cinema.

“The favourite toys for a while were models of the gold state coach, cheap plastic or expensive die-cast ones.”
