PLANS have been unveiled for the second annual Edward Winslow Day in Droitwich following the success of last year’s inaugural event.
Edward Winslow Day is a celebration of one of Droitwich’s most prominent and historically significant residents from the 17th century.
The event celebrates the life and times of the Droitwich born man who became one of the first English natives to set sail for the shores of the United States, on the Mayflower Ship from Plymouth in England, in 1620.
Held on Thanksgiving Day, the festivities give a nod to Winslow’s involvement in the first ever Thanksgiving dinner in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
This year the organisers are going further with the celebrations. The event will now take place over three days from Thursday, November 27 to Saturday, November 29.
Among the celebrations will be a United States of America flag raising, exhibitions including interactive experiences, live music and entertainment, displays, Thanksgiving meals across the town, a statue dressing, a church service and more.
New to this year’s event will be a Winslow Awards ceremony and business initiatives as well as a street market.
Again, for this year, the event will encourage attendees to make donations to local foodbanks and community pantries across the town.
Councillor Richard Morris, chair of the organising committee said: “We have looked at the Edward Winslow story and the words: friendship, thanks, giving, diplomacy and peace which are important in shaping our activities. “We have other ideas being worked on and hope to feature some key talks.
“I would like to thank all the individuals and groups involved and would like to hear from any others who believes they could contribute in anyway.”
