Droitwich's Gardeners Arms gearing up to toast 'Beer Day Britain'

Droitwich Editorial 7th Jun, 2017   0

THE GARDENERS Arms in Droitwich will be one of the many pubs across the country raising a glass to Beer Day Britain.

This will be the third year the event has been held after it was launched in 2015 by industry expert Jane Peyton to give pubs and beer a much-needed boost.

Everyday in the UK, 29 pubs are closing their doors for the final time and it is hoped Beer Day Britain will help in some way to reversing that trend.

The event is supported by the British Beer and Pub Association, CAMRA Campaign for Real Ale, and Society of Independent Brewers.

Beer Day Britain is the UK’s annual national beer day when people can celebrate our national drink. To help the industry go down to your local pub on Thursday, June 15, to celebrate National Cheers To Beer at 7pm.

This date is significant because it is also the date that the Magna Carta was sealed in 1215.

Ale is mentioned in Magna Carta and having the Magna Carta connection with Beer Day Britain makes people appreciate that for centuries ale and ale houses has played a central role in this country.

It is hoped pubs in Worcestershire and beyond will be encouraged to host pub related events on June 15 but also over the weekend.

As well celebrating Britain’s amazing brewing heritage, people are urged to join in with the big UK-wide party, raising the profile of beer as Britain’s national drink and supporting local pubs.

Simon Berry, landlord of the Gardeners Arms, said: “The support for your local pub in towns and villages is paramount and crucial to the development of continuing our British heritage of the local pub keeping our public houses thriving prosperity for future generations.”

Jane said back on June 15, 2015, when she launched Beer Day Britain, she hoped it would take off in the way it had.

“It was well-received at the launch and since then it has gone from strength to strength.

“Thanks to the link to Magna Carta we had plenty of press coverage and this year we have had a massive take up from pubs, pub companies, breweries and retailers.

“It takes a few years to get a national day going and this year we have been really surprised with how many organisations and people have got involved, like Simon at the Gardeners Arms in Droitwich.”

She added it also helped that Father’s Day falls on the Sunday, June 18.

“Because of that we want all the families to join in and say ‘cheers to beer’ with a weekend-long celebration.

“And there is no better place to do that than in your local pub.

“Beer is such a convivial drink which brings people together, no matter what their age or background – it’s a great common denominator.”
