Droitwich's MP Nigel Huddleston backs PM's plans for snap general election

Droitwich Editorial 18th Apr, 2017

MP FOR Mid Worcestershire Nigel Huddleston has pledged his support to Prime Minister Theresa May’s plan to ask Parliament for permission to call an early General Election.

Mrs May revealed her proposals during a statement in Downing Street this morning (Tuesday) and will ask Parliament to vote in favour of the plans tomorrow (Wednesday)

The Prime Minister said a vote was needed ahead of the negotiations to leave the European Union which are expected to begin later this year.

“We need a general election and we need one now. We have at this moment a one off chance to get this done.

“I have only recently and reluctantly come to this conclusion. Since I became prime minister I’ve said there should be no election until 2020, but now I have concluded that the only way to guarantee certainty and security for the years ahead is to hold this election and seek your support for the decisions we must take,” she added.

Droitwich’s MP Mr Huddleston said he backed Mrs May’s justification for an early election and would vote in favour.

“I am proud of the achievements of this Government – employment is at record levels, unemployment is at its lowest level for 45 years, more than 3million UK workers have been taken out of paying income tax altogether and millions are benefitting from the national living wage. Government spending is at record levels, including on pensions, health and education.

“It has been an honour to serve as a Member of Parliament for the last two years and I hope to be able to continue to represent the interests of the people of Mid Worcestershire for many years to come,” he added.
