A DROITWICH swimmer has qualified for a spot in five races at the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
Matt Richards, 21, swam to glory in the Aquatics GB Championships (Paris Qualifiers) last week (April 2-7), winning two events and coming second in another – all within qualifying times.
Matt won the 100 and 200 metre freestyle events, therefore also qualifying for the 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m freestyle relays. He also came second to Ben Proud in the 50 metre freestyle.
He will represent Great Britain at all five events in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Depending on the selectors, he may also be in with a chance of competing in the Medley and Mixed Medley Relays. This could give Matt the chance of securing seven Olympic medals.
The Droitwich swimmer, has enjoyed previous success on the international stage, winning gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay aged just 17.
And Richards backed up that display by winning men’s 200 freestyle gold at the 2023 World Championships in 2023.
He also won gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay and bronze in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay while he set a new British record in the 100m freestyle.
That came after he pipped 2020 Olympic champion Tom Dean and silver medallist Duncan Scott to 200m freestyle glory at the British Championships to become British champion.
