ECO ACTION- 'God made us stewards of our world'

THIS column is brought to you by Bromsgrove Extinction Rebellion

OVER the last six months I have got to know people in Christian Climate Action, mainly through daily prayer on zoom.

God made us stewards of our world.

Liberty.eu tells us: “Scripture is permeated with examples of God commanding us to tend to his creation.

Genesis 2:15, after the creation of mankind. Jeremiah 2:7 and Deuteronomy 11:12.

We are stewards of the earth, and we have a responsibility to care for it.

Scripture is clear that all of God’s creation, not just mankind, brings him glory.

Therefore, our stewardship and upkeep of the earth is one of the greatest offerings of worship we can give.”

So let us use our God-given brains and strength to protect it. We are members of CCA.

‘Christian Climate Action is a community of Christians supporting each other to take meaningful action in the face of imminent and catastrophic anthropogenic climate breakdown (caused by mankind, though only 28 per cent of US Evangelicals believe this).

They are inspired by Jesus Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit.

Following the example of social justice movements of the past, they carry out acts of public witness, non-violent protest and civil disobedience to urge those in power to make the changes needed.

They work alongside other non-violent protest groups such as Extinction Rebellion (XR).’

In the past members of CCA have been arrested and some have served prison sentences for eg spraying paint on buildings connected with the fossil fuel industry. Others have held placards outside cathedrals to protest about their fossil fuel investments.

This has led to more than half of C of E dioceses divesting from Fossil Fuels.

CCA is contributing to the ‘The Big One’ – a large – and total law-abiding – demonstration at Westminster from April 21 and continuing for several days.

Many Christian groups will be represented, such as Christian Aid, Green Christian, CAFOD, Operation Noah, and conservation groups like Whale and Dolphin Conservation and WWF, protest groups like Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, CND and several trade unions.

This action is aimed at the UK government which is being far too slow in transitioning to renewable energy, restoring biodiversity, etc. XR is simply hosting this action – providing stewarding, toilets etc.

If you wish to join ‘The Big One’ protest, ‘XR Worcestershire has arranged transport from Worcester or Kidderminster on April 21 and 22 and overnight accommodation in London can be arranged through CCA.
