STUDENTS and staff from Westacre Middle School will be showing the importance of protecting the environment by turning off as many electrical appliances as possible around the grounds on Friday.

The school will be hitting the off switch on the lights, interactive boards, computers and kitchen appliances for half an hour following an idea by the school’s ECO warriors, who wanted to highlight the need to conserve energy.

Youngsters have contacted other local schools and businesses who have agreed to dim their lights and turn off as many electrical devices as possible for half an hour.

And students and staff at Westacre will be turning this 30-minute switch-off into an annual event.

Deputy Headteacher, Catherine Doolin, said the children feel passionate about the environment and are always looking for new ways to save energy and raise awareness.

Eco lead Charlotte Derbyshire added: “The children will be exploring the energy dashboard for the school and will be looking at how much energy and money was saved.

“Given the struggles many families are having at the moment with the price of energy, it also supports children thinking about how to save money.”
