Everyone welcome to fun in the theatre tonight when comedy play reading will be held at the Norbury

RESIDENTS wanting to have a go at acting can go along to a play reading at Droitwich’s Norbury Theatre tonight (Friday).

Lettice and Lovage – a comedy by Peter Shaffer  – will be read in the venue’s Green Room at 7.30pm.

The play readings are very relaxed, informal and above all great fun.

Participants  don’t need to be an actor, or have even acted before.

The play itself centres around Lettice who has inherited theatricality and eccentricity from her mother who toured with an all female Shakespearian company.

She is employed as a tourist guide in a shabby stately home so enlivens its dull history with her own over-imaginative fantasies until caught and sacked. She is later visited by the starchy Preservation Trust official who fired her and an unlikely friendship develops.

The play was written specifically for Maggie Smith, who originated the title role of Lettice Douffet in both the English and American runs of the production. The role of Lotte Schoen was played by Margaret Tyzack.

Following a tour of provincial theatres, the play was produced in London in 1987. Its two-year run of 768 performances at the Globe Theatre counts as one of the longer runs in London theatrical history.
