A GROUP of Falklands War veterans on a cycling journey from Lands End to John o’ Groats stopped off in Droitwich to lay a wreath at the town’s Victoria Square memorial.

The 21 cyclists, all aged 60 and over, passed through the spa town on their 1,000 mile riding journey to remember those who lost their lives in the 1982 conflict.

A wreath laying ceremony was hosted at the Falklands War Memorial in Victoria Square by Reverend Laura Handy at 6pm on Tuesday (May 22).

Droitwich Royal British Legion supported the event alongside many town and county dignitaries including new town chairman, Coun George Duffy new mayor, Coun Alex Sinton and chairman of Worcestershire Armed Forces Covenant, Coun Richard Morris.

The Falklands Forty Group formed in recognition of the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War in 2022 and are hoping to raise as much money as possible for Parkinson’s UK charity during their cycling journey.

In remembrance of those who gave up their lives, the group have planned to host formal wreath laying’s at five points along the journey.

Ahead of the project, the group had aimed to raise £4,000 to help with costs of the ride and help raise vital funds.

They have smashed their fundraising target just five days into the challenge. At the time we went to press, the group had raised £8,199.

The journey started on May 18 and is expected to take 15 days. By the end of the arduous journey, the cyclists will have completed 1,018 miles and climbed 61,140 feet of elevation – more than twice the height of Mount Everest.
